Formula First

A key goal of Formula First is to meet the 2015 Motorsport NZ Strategy objective of providing a National Championship formula that is a breeding ground for young talent.

Formula First does this with a set of rules that control cost effective technically standardised vehicles with just enough freedom in design and suspension for drivers to develop initial skills in the art of chassis and suspension tuning.

The predominant emphasis is on driver talent rather than dollar spent. A further goal of Formula First is to provide a sporting environment that promotes quality grass root values such as camaraderie, fair play, good sportsmanship and having fun.

In 2011, Formula First held its 43rd Annual General Meeting and the class has held MotorSport NZ National Championship status since 1975. This entry level single-seater open wheel race car formula is based on Volkswagen Beetle mechanical components. The enduring success is largely due to the formula’s simplicity, cost effectiveness and a strong working relationship with Motorsport NZ to ensure that the evolutionary changes introduced have not compromised the original aims of the class.

Former graduates of Formula First include Brendon Hartley, Shane van Gisbergen, Richie Stanaway, Chris Pither and Scott Dixon.

Please see the Formula First website for more information on the series, and to get involved.
